Interior Decorator Malaysia: Designer, Decorator or Full-Home Customization?

Published 4 October 2026 · Updated 16 October 2026 · JIYU SDN BHD

IN SHORT

An interior designer plans how a home is laid out and used, an interior decorator styles it with furnishings and finishes, and a full-home customization company makes and installs the fitted cabinets. Hire by the state of your home: a designer for a bare unit that needs a plan, a customization company for a finished home that only needs cabinets, and a decorator for a home that only needs a new look.

Type “interior decorator Malaysia” or “interior designer in Malaysia” into a search box and the two names look interchangeable, while the business that actually builds your cabinets does not appear in the question at all. They are three different jobs, and the right one to call depends on what state your home is in today. This guide explains each role, shows where built-in cabinets fit, and matches the three to a bare unit, a finished home that needs storage and a home that only needs a new look.

What does an interior designer do, and how is that different from an interior decorator?

Wikipedia’s entry on interior design describes the designer as the person who plans, researches, coordinates and manages an improvement project for the inside of a building. That can include developing the concept, planning the space, inspecting the site, dealing with the other people on the project and seeing the design carried out. The same entry describes decoration as furnishing or adorning a space with decorative elements, a job that can come with advice and practical help alongside. So a designer’s work can include decoration, while decoration alone is not design. In daily terms, a designer decides how the rooms are laid out and used, and a decorator works on how they look: paint colours, furniture, curtains, lighting fittings and accessories. A title alone does not tell you which of these jobs you are buying, so ask each person to list in writing what they will do on your home: layout, site visits, coordinating other trades or styling only.

Where do built-in cabinets fit between the designer and the decorator?

Fitted cabinets sit in the gap between the two jobs. A designer can draw where the kitchen run, wardrobes and shoe cabinet go, and a decorator can pick the colours and handles that suit the room, but neither a drawing nor a colour scheme makes a cabinet. Someone has to measure the walls, cut the boards, assemble the carcasses and fit them on site. That is the third job, cabinet making and installation, and it is what a full-home customization company does. For you the practical question is who owns each hand-off. If a designer drew the cabinets, ask whether the cabinet maker will build from those drawings or redraw them. If you have no designer, ask whether the company’s own drawings or 3D images come with its service. Whichever route you take, have the board named in the quotation, so the paper says what your cabinets are made of.

Which one do you need for a bare unit you have just collected?

A bare unit leaves a long list of decisions open, and they depend on one another: which walls stay, where the kitchen sits, where sockets and ceiling lights go, and where the wardrobes will stand. That makes planning the first job, so a designer, or a renovation firm whose service includes design, is the natural first call. Styling choices can wait until the layout is settled. It can help to confirm the socket, pipe and air-conditioning positions with whoever draws the cabinets before the drawings are finalised. Wiring and ceiling work are different trades from cabinets, so check which of these jobs each company's quotation covers and which it does not. A designer who manages the whole project may take some of them on.

Your home is already finished and you only want cabinets: who do you call?

If the walls, floors and wiring are done and what is missing is storage, you can go straight to a cabinet maker or a full-home customization company. You may not need a designer to draw a wardrobe or a decorator for a kitchen run, unless you want advice on layout or style. What helps is a clear brief. Prepare a floor plan or photos with rough measurements, a list of the rooms, what you want to store, the appliances going into the kitchen and the date you want to move in. Then compare companies on what each one gives you before you commit: a site visit to measure, a drawing or 3D image so you can see the layout, and a quotation that lists each cabinet. Ask who installs, the company’s own team or a separate installer, and compare on those answers rather than on the total alone.

If you only want a new look, do you need a designer at all?

If the rooms already work and you want a change of style, you are in decorator territory. Wikipedia describes decoration as furnishing or adorning a space with decorative elements. Examples are paint colours, furniture, curtains, lighting fittings, rugs and accessories. A decorator can be enough here because nothing built-in is changing. The point to watch is scope creep. Once you want to move the kitchen, add a wall of storage or change where the sockets go, the job has turned into layout work, and you are back to a designer or a customization company. A simple test is to walk through each room with a notepad and list every item you want to change. Things you can move out of the room, such as furniture, curtains, rugs and accessories, are styling. Anything you want built in to stay on the wall or floor, such as a new wardrobe, is a separate cabinet job, so get it quoted on its own, apart from the styling.

Where does JIYU fit in, and what does it not do?

JIYU is not an interior design company. For homeowners it makes built-in cabinetry such as kitchen cabinets and wardrobes from our ENF-grade plywood, where ENF is a formaldehyde-release grade with a limit of 0.025 mg/m³ under GB/T 39600-2021. The process starts with your needs, then a free on-site measurement, then free 3D renderings for homeowners who are seriously considering us. The quotation is itemised, and you sign only after you have confirmed it. The cabinets are then made to your measurements and installed by our own installation team, with a technician supervising on site and walking through the handover with you. A full-home project is scheduled for three months from the day you hold the keys and the management office approves works. Public holidays, weekends and the time you spend changing your own design are not counted, and the counting method is written into the contract before you sign. Plumbing, electrical and ceiling work are subcontracted, and JIYU is not a general renovation contractor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one company handle design, styling and cabinets together?

It depends on the company, so read the quotation rather than the job title. A business that covers more than one of the three jobs should list each job as its own line, so you can see what is included and what you would still have to arrange yourself. If cabinets are in the quotation, check that the board, the drawings and the installation are named too.

Does a company that makes and installs cabinets count as an interior designer?

Making and installing cabinets is a different job from planning how the inside of a home is laid out and used. A company can do both, so ask which of the jobs each quotation covers and which it leaves out. If a company only does the cabinets, you will need to decide who plans the layout.

Do I need both an interior designer and a full-home customization company?

It depends on how much is still undecided. If the layout is still open, a designer’s plan can come first and the cabinet side can build from it. If the layout is settled and you want storage, a customization company on its own can be enough. If you do hire a designer, hand their drawings to the cabinet side early so the measurements and the plan agree.

What should I ask about the schedule before signing with a customization company?

Ask which event starts the count, such as signing, the deposit, collecting the keys or the management office’s approval to start work. Ask what pauses the count, how the days are counted and how progress reaches you. Get the answers into the contract, not only into a chat, so both sides are reading the same schedule.
