How to Choose an Interior Design Company in Malaysia: Questions to Ask Before You Sign

Published 4 October 2026 · Updated 9 October 2026 · JIYU SDN BHD

IN SHORT

Before you sign with an interior design company in Malaysia, ask what you will receive at each design stage, who keeps the drawings, how revisions are counted, who builds and installs the work, and which board and formaldehyde grade the materials list names. Judge the company on written answers and on completed projects you can trace back to drawings, not on a “best” or “top” ranking.

Searching for an interior design company in Malaysia can bring up portfolios, 3D renders and promises, which on their own do not tell you what you are buying at the design stage. This guide stays on that stage: what you should be handed, who keeps the drawings, how changes are counted, who builds and installs, and what the materials list must say. Contract start dates, payment stages and building approval are covered in our guide to choosing a renovation contractor, so we do not repeat them here.

What should an interior design company hand over before you sign?

Ask for the design stage to be described as a list of things you receive, because “interior design services in Malaysia” can mean anything from a layout sketch to a fully managed build. A useful list has four items: a floor plan showing the layout you agreed, 3D views of the rooms you care about, a materials list that names the finishes and boards, and a quotation itemised room by room that points back to those drawings. Then ask which of the four sit inside the design stage and which are released only after you sign the build. If the unit has not been handed over yet, ask when the site will be measured, because a layout drawn from the developer’s floor plan can change once the real walls are measured. Finally, ask whether the design stage is charged separately, and what you would hold in your hands if you decided to stop after it.

Who keeps the drawings, and how are revisions counted?

Ask whether you receive the drawings as files you can keep, and whether you may show them to another contractor or cabinet maker to get a comparison quotation. If the drawings stay with the company, it is harder to compare its quotation with anyone else’s. Revisions deserve the same plain questions. Does the design stage include a set number of revision rounds, and what happens once they are used up? What counts as one round: a new colour for the doors, or a wall that moves? Does a change after you approve the layout trigger redrawn plans and a reissued quotation? And what happens to a change you request after production has started? You do not need perfect answers on the first day, but you do need to put the same questions to every company you speak to, and to have the answers written next to the design stage so that a later disagreement has something to point at.

Does the company build the work itself, or hand it to a contractor?

A business listed as an interior design firm in Malaysia, or just as an “interior company in Malaysia”, may design only, design and build with its own team, or design and then appoint contractors to carry out the work. Each of these can work, but each puts different people in your home, so ask which one applies. Ask for the name of the company that will carry out the work, who supervises it on site, and whom you call when something is wrong with the finished result. For cabinets, ask two separate questions: who makes them, and who installs them. The maker and the installer can be different companies, and a drawer that does not run properly can be harder to sort out when no single party answers for both. Ask the same about trades such as water and electrical work and ceilings. A company that can name which parts it does itself and which it subcontracts gives you something you can check; “we handle everything” does not.

What must the materials list say about boards and formaldehyde grade?

The materials list is where the design becomes a specification, so read it before you approve the quotation. For each board it should name the type (plywood, MDF or particleboard), the thickness and the formaldehyde grade. Backs and drawer bases can use a different board from the carcass, so they need their own lines. Wording such as “eco board” or “E-grade board” leaves the grade open. Under GB/T 39600-2021, ENF means emission of 0.025 mg/m³ or less, E0 means 0.050 mg/m³ or less and E1 means 0.124 mg/m³ or less, measured by the climate-chamber method; a lower figure means less formaldehyde released. Because ENF is a grade under that standard, ask what evidence sits behind the grade a company names. If the answer is a third-party test report, read the sample that was tested, the standard used and the measured value. The result applies to the sample that was submitted, so ask whether the board going into your home is the same product.

How do you judge past projects instead of a “best” or “top” ranking?

Searches for the best interior design company in Malaysia or the top interior design company in Malaysia can return lists, but a list does not know your layout, your schedule or what you want built, and this guide will not rank anyone. Put the same questions to every company instead. Ask to see a completed project close to yours in unit type and scope, and ask for its drawings and materials list next to the photos, so you can see whether what was drawn is what was built. Ask which parts of that project the company designed and which parts it also built, because a gallery can show work the company only designed. Look at the details a photo can show: how doors line up, whether exposed edges are neatly sealed, and how cabinets meet the wall and the ceiling. When you read reviews, look for what they say about changes, replies and handover, not only about how the finished room looks.

Where does JIYU fit when you hire an interior design company?

JIYU SDN BHD is not an interior design company and not a general renovation contractor. We build built-in cabinetry such as kitchen cabinets and wardrobes for homeowners, using our ENF-grade board, and our own installation team installs it; water and electrical work and ceilings are subcontracted trades. If you already hold a designer’s drawings, we quote the cabinets from your specification. If not, you share your floor plan, number of rooms, move-in date and rough budget; we measure the site at no charge; we prepare a 3D design, also free for homeowners who are seriously considering us; you receive an itemised quotation and confirm it before signing; the cabinets are then made to your measurements, installed and handed over with our technicians supervising on site. The board is ENF grade (0.025 mg/m³ or less under GB/T 39600-2021); a submitted sample measured 0.022 mg/m³ in third-party test report JC26-WT0087, and the board carries a 10-year one-to-one limited warranty covering manufacturing defects only: glue failure (delamination), cracking not caused by external force, and moisture blistering caused by a manufacturing defect.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I bring to a first meeting with an interior design company in Malaysia?

Bring the floor plan from your developer, photos of the unit if you can already enter it, the number of rooms you want designed, the date you hope to move in and a rough budget range. List the furniture and appliances you plan to keep or buy, because cut-outs and cabinet sizes depend on them. A short list of what you dislike in other homes can also help the designer see what to avoid.

Do I need an interior design company if I only want cabinets and wardrobes?

Not necessarily. If the rooms are already built and you only need cabinetry, a cabinet company can measure the site and draw the cabinets itself. What matters is that the drawing and the materials list are specific enough to compare, and that someone is responsible for how the cabinets meet the walls, the ceiling and any wiring or plumbing. An interior design company becomes more useful when the layout itself, the lighting or the loose furniture also need planning.

Is a 3D render enough to approve the design?

A render shows how the design is meant to look; it is not a specification. Colours on screen can look different from the finished surface, and a render does not show whether a door aligns or a drawer runs smoothly. Approve the design against dimensioned drawings and a materials list that names each board, finish and fitting, and use the render to check the layout and proportions.

What if the materials list says “to be confirmed”?

Ask which lines are still open and who makes the decision on each. A quotation with open lines is hard to compare with one that has none, so ask for the open lines to be filled in before you sign, or for the quotation to mark which items are provisional. If the board grade is one of the open lines, settle that one first and get it written in before production starts.
