Malaysia's year-round high humidity quietly decides which furniture holds up and which comes back as a complaint. Board that looked perfect in the workshop can bow, swell at the edges, or lift its surface months after installation. This guide is for furniture factories, cabinet and wardrobe makers, and renovation firms who want to stop guessing and choose board that stays flat — while satisfying clients who now ask about formaldehyde too.
Wood-based panels move with moisture. When a board absorbs humidity unevenly — one face more than the other — it cups, bows or twists. In a dry climate a cheaper board may never reveal this weakness; in Malaysia's year-round high humidity it shows up fast, often after the furniture is already installed and the complaint is yours to handle. The failure is rarely the surface finish — it is the core underneath. So the first thing to judge is not how the board looks, but how its core is built.
Plywood is built from thin veneers stacked so the grain direction alternates from one layer to the next. Because each layer's tendency to move is countered by the layers above and below running the other way, the internal stresses cancel out and the panel resists warping, cupping and twisting. More layers and more consistent hot-pressing mean more stability. JIYU Shengshi Gelin plywood uses a 9-layer or 11-layer cross-laminated structure, which is what gives it its dimensional stability. Single-direction or hollow-core boards have nothing to counter the movement — those are the ones that bow.
The adhesive between the layers does more than hold the veneers together. Second — and this surprises many buyers — the glue is where most of a board's formaldehyde comes from. Conventional plywood uses urea-formaldehyde resin, which keeps releasing formaldehyde and does not reach the strictest emission grade. Soybean protein glue is what allows a panel to reach the ENF grade — the strictest, ultra-low-formaldehyde tier. So the same choice that keeps a board stable in humidity also keeps its emissions low.
A furniture panel is only as good as its grip on hardware. Hinges, drawer slides and connectors all rely on screws biting into a dense, void-free core. Hollow or low-density board lets screws work loose over time — doors sag, drawers rattle. A dense, fully-laminated core locks screws firmly and keeps them there. So when you evaluate a board, do not stop at the surface — ask about the core density, because that is what decides whether the furniture is still tight in five years.
Health-conscious homeowners and specifiers increasingly ask what is inside the board, and an eco label or a grade name on a brochure no longer satisfies them. Under China's GB/T 39600-2021 standard, measured in a 1m3 climate chamber, ENF is the strictest grade at no more than 0.025 mg/m3, ahead of E0 (no more than 0.050) and E1 (no more than 0.124). Note that ENF does not mean the absence of formaldehyde: wood contains trace natural formaldehyde, so no board can truthfully be called zero formaldehyde. What you want is a third-party test report you can show a client. Before committing a production run to any board, run six questions. One: is the core a cross-grain multi-layer plywood, not single-grain or hollow-core? Two: what adhesive is used — soybean or urea-formaldehyde? Three: what is the formaldehyde grade, and is there a third-party report in mg/m3? Four: how dense is the core for screw-holding? Five: how steady is supply, and where is stock held — a board that performs but arrives late still costs you a production slot. Six, and most overlooked: what does the written warranty cover? A supplier confident in humidity performance will put it in writing.
