For a Malaysian kitchen, use 18 mm multi-layer plywood for the carcass, doors and shelves, and 9 mm for back panels. Plywood is cross-laminated the whole way through, so it holds hinge and runner screws better than blockboard or particle board in a room that gets wet. Because a closed cabinet is a near-sealed space, the formaldehyde grade of the board inside the carcass matters as much as the finish you can see — JIYU supplies ENF grade, tested at 0.022 mg/m³ under GB/T 39600-2021.
The three boards people compare
Every cabinet quotation in Malaysia comes down to one of these three. They fail in different ways, and the difference only shows up after a year or two.

What actually fails
It is almost always the carcass — and almost always one of these three.
The face is sealed; the edge often is not. Under a sink or beside a dishwasher, water finds the cut first. A cross-laminated core resists it far longer than compressed chips.
They come in at floor and wall contact, where nobody looks until a door stops closing. JIYU boards carry 3-year termite cover on top of the 10-year board warranty.
Hinges and drawer runners are held by a few screws in the panel edge. If the core is voids or chips, re-tightening only makes the hole bigger.
Why the grade matters here
Formaldehyde emission is measured with the board sealed inside a 1m³ climate chamber, because that is the condition where emission shows up. A shut cabinet is nearer to that than an open room — and a kitchen is warmer, which raises emission from any board that emits.

Ask any supplier for their report number. A grade printed on a label is not the same as a tested result.

Also worth writing in: the formaldehyde grade (and asking for the report number that backs it), and sheet size — 2440 × 1220 mm is standard, and cutting plans are built around it.
Questions we get asked
18 mm for carcasses, shelves and door panels. Thinner board saves a little money per sheet but sags on wide shelf spans and holds hinge screws poorly, which is where most cabinet complaints start. Backs and drawer bottoms use a thinner sheet — JIYU stocks 6 mm for that; some quotations spec 9 mm or 12 mm instead, which is fine too, just confirm what your supplier actually has on the shelf before it goes on the cutting list.
Yes — same carcass, same board choice. "Kitchen cupboards" and "kitchen cabinets" are the same thing in Malaysian usage, and everything on this page applies to both: 18 mm plywood for the carcass and doors, formaldehyde grade checked on the board that goes inside, not just the visible finish.
Plywood, for a kitchen. Blockboard has a core of solid timber strips, so it is light and stiff along its length and is fine for wardrobe doors and long shelves. But those strips leave voids and joints, so screws near an edge hold less reliably and moisture travels along the core. Multi-layer plywood is cross-laminated the whole way through, which is why it holds hinge and runner screws better in a wet room.
It is common because it is cheap, and it is the board most often replaced. Particle board is compressed wood chips: once water reaches the core through a cut edge or a screw hole, the chips swell and the panel does not recover. In a kitchen — sink base, dishwasher, kettle corner — that is not a rare event.
Three things, in this order: moisture reaching an unsealed cut edge, termites entering through the base or wall contact, and screws pulling out of a core that never held them well. Colour and finish almost never fail first — the carcass does.

ENF is the strictest class under GB/T 39600-2021 at ≤ 0.025 mg/m³, measured by the 1m³ climate chamber method. E0 allows up to 0.050 and E1 up to 0.124 mg/m³. JIYU board was tested at 0.022 mg/m³ under report JC26-WT0087, issued by the CMA-accredited Liuzhou Quality Inspection and Testing Research Center.
