Kitchen cabinet quotes in Malaysia vary widely because they are built from different things: how the price is measured (per linear foot vs per unit), the carcass board grade, the door finish, the hardware brand, the edge banding method, and whether demolition, plumbing and electrical are included. Two quotes only become comparable once those six are aligned.
Homeowners often assume a big price gap means someone is overcharging. Usually it means the two quotes are not describing the same kitchen. A cabinet price is not one number. It is six decisions stacked on top of each other, and most quotes only show the total. Until you align those six, comparing the totals tells you nothing. Here they are, in the order that moves the price most.
Malaysian quotes commonly use one of two units. Per linear foot (per ft run): you pay for the length of cabinetry along the wall. Simple to quote, but it hides height and depth. A 10-foot run of tall units and a 10-foot run of low units can be quoted the same way and cost very differently to build. Per unit / per carcass: you pay per cabinet box. More transparent about what you actually get, but harder to compare across companies because unit sizes differ. Before you compare anything else, confirm both quotes use the same unit, and that tall units, corner units and appliance housings are priced explicitly rather than bundled into a running-foot rate.
The carcass is the box behind the door. You will never look at it, but it is what fails first in a Malaysian kitchen, and replacing it means tearing out the whole run. What moves the cost: the board type (particle board vs plywood vs MDF), the number of plies and whether they are symmetrically cross-laminated, and the formaldehyde grade of the adhesive system used. On grade, the comparable numbers under GB/T 39600-2021 are: - E1 = formaldehyde emission under 0.124 mg/m3 - E0 = under 0.050 mg/m3 - ENF (formaldehyde-free grade) = under 0.025 mg/m3, the strictest tier in that standard A quote that says only eco board or E-grade board has not told you anything. Ask for the grade, the standard it is measured against, and the third-party report number.
Doors are typically the single largest line in a kitchen quote, because they are the part you see and touch. Roughly in ascending cost: melamine-faced (paint-free, wipes clean, limited profiles), then acrylic or high-gloss laminate, then 2K spray paint (any colour, any profile, but shows wipe marks near the hob over time), then solid or veneered timber. A quote can look cheap simply because it assumes the plainest door finish. Check what finish is specified before you conclude anything about value.
Hinges, drawer runners and lift-up mechanisms are quoted as a bundle far more often than they are itemised. The spread between a generic runner and a branded soft-close runner across a full kitchen is significant, and it is the difference you feel every single day. Ask for the hardware brand by name and the warranty on it. Soft close on its own is a feature, not a brand, and not a warranty.
In humid kitchens, the edge is where failure starts. Moisture enters through the cut edge of the board, not through the face. Three things drive both cost and lifespan: the banding material and thickness, the bonding method (standard hot-melt vs laser or PUR), and how clean the panel cut is underneath. A rough cut will show a hairline gap no matter what is bonded over it. When you inspect a sample, run a fingernail outward along the edge. Wherever it catches is where it will open first.
This is where quotes diverge most quietly. A number that excludes tearing out the old kitchen, moving a water point, adding sockets, and hauling away debris will always look better than one that includes them. Ask for these as explicit line items, priced or marked excluded. A quote that leaves them unmentioned is not cheaper; it is incomplete.

Can I see the third-party report number? 3. Which hardware brand, and what is the warranty on it? 4. What does the warranty actually cover - the board only, or labour and installation too? Which page is that on? That last question separates suppliers quickly. Many quote a 10-year warranty without stating the scope. We put that in the contract, and you should ask every other supplier to put their scope in writing too.
Is a cheaper kitchen quote always lower quality?
Not necessarily, but it is almost always describing something different. Align the six items first: measurement unit, carcass board grade, door finish, hardware brand, edge banding method, and what is included or excluded. If a gap remains after that, then ask what accounts for it.
Why do suppliers quote per linear foot if it hides so much?
Because it is fast and it lets a customer get a number on the first call. It is not dishonest by itself. The problem starts when tall units, corner units and appliance housings are folded into the same rate as ordinary low units, since they cost very different amounts to build.
How much of the price is the board versus the doors and hardware?
It varies by design, but doors and hardware usually account for more of the visible budget, while the carcass board accounts for more of the risk. The carcass is what you cannot replace without tearing the run out, which is why its grade is worth confirming even though you will never see it.
Does formaldehyde grade really change the price much?
The grade reflects the adhesive system used, so it does move the board cost. Whether that difference matters to you is a budget decision, but you should at least know which grade you are getting. A quote saying only eco board has not answered the question.
