Formaldehyde in plywood · Malaysia

No plywood is truly
“formaldehyde free.”

Wood itself releases trace formaldehyde naturally, and most manufactured board is bonded with formaldehyde-based adhesive — so “formaldehyde-free plywood” is not a real product, no matter who is advertising it. What actually exists is emission grading with a number: ENF, the strictest class under Malaysia’s national standard GB/T 39600-2021, caps emission at ≤0.025 mg/m³. Below is what that number means, how the three grades compare, and how to check a supplier’s claim instead of taking the label on trust.

The three grades, side by side

Same national standard, three real ceilings.

GB/T 39600-2021 defines these classes with a lab test, not a marketing tier. A supplier who says 'low formaldehyde' without naming one of these is not telling you anything checkable.

Formaldehyde emission ceiling by grade, GB/T 39600-2021E1 allows up to 0.124 mg/m³, E0 up to 0.050 mg/m³, ENF up to 0.025 mg/m³. JIYU's third-party tested value is 0.022 mg/m³, inside the ENF ceiling.JIYU tested: 0.022 mg/m³E10.124 mg/m³E00.050 mg/m³ENF0.025 mg/m³ — strictest classSource: JC26-WT0087, CMA-accredited lab, tested 2026-07-14Standard: GB/T 39600-2021 · 1m³ climate chamber method
GradeCeilingWhat it means
E1≤ 0.124 mg/m³The baseline class — most conventional plywood, particleboard and MDF sold without a stated grade sits here or is not tested at all.
E0≤ 0.050 mg/m³A mid tier, roughly 2.5x stricter than E1.
ENF≤ 0.025 mg/m³The strictest class defined by GB/T 39600-2021. Requires a different adhesive (soy-based, not urea-formaldehyde) to reach — not a labelling choice.

How to actually check

A label is a claim. A report number is checkable.

These are the two questions that separate a real ENF board from a sticker.

1. Ask for the test report number

Not a certificate photo, not a grade printed on the invoice — a report number issued by an accredited lab that you could, in principle, look up. JIYU’s is JC26-WT0087, measured at 0.022 mg/m³.

2. Ask which standard it was tested against

GB/T 39600-2021 is the standard behind E1/E0/ENF. If a supplier cites a different standard, or none, the number is not comparable to the one above.

Questions we get asked

What people actually search before they buy.

Is plywood formaldehyde free?

No — and no commercial plywood is. Wood itself contains trace natural formaldehyde, and most manufactured board is bonded with formaldehyde-based adhesive. What exists instead is emission grading: how little a panel releases, tested and stated as a number. ENF grade, the strictest class under Malaysia's national standard GB/T 39600-2021, caps emission at ≤0.025 mg/m³.

Where can I buy formaldehyde-free plywood in Malaysia?

You cannot, because it is not a real product category — any supplier advertising "formaldehyde-free" plywood is describing something that does not hold up, since wood emits trace formaldehyde regardless of the glue used. What you can buy, and what you should actually ask for, is ENF-grade board with a third-party test report you can check. JIYU's ENF-grade board is tested by an accredited lab (report JC26-WT0087, measured at 0.022 mg/m³).

How much formaldehyde is in plywood?

It depends entirely on the grade — there is no single figure for "plywood". Under GB/T 39600-2021, E1 (the baseline) allows up to 0.124 mg/m³, E0 up to 0.050 mg/m³, and ENF (the strictest tier) up to 0.025 mg/m³. A supplier who cannot tell you which grade, or point you to a test report with that number, has not actually told you anything.

Is formaldehyde in plywood dangerous?

Formaldehyde emission from indoor materials is a recognised indoor air quality concern, which is exactly why national standards like GB/T 39600-2021 set emission ceilings for manufactured wood panels rather than leaving it unregulated. The practical response is not to look for a product with none — that does not exist — but to choose the grade with the lowest verified ceiling and ask for the report number, not a label.

Does all plywood have formaldehyde?

Practically, yes, in trace amounts — wood is a natural source of it. What varies is the adhesive: most core plywood, particleboard and MDF use urea-formaldehyde resin, which adds significantly to emission on top of what the wood itself releases. Board made with soy-based adhesive instead of urea-formaldehyde resin is how ENF-grade emission ceilings become achievable at all.

Is formaldehyde used in plywood glue?

In most plywood, yes — urea-formaldehyde resin is the standard, lower-cost adhesive for wood-based panels. JIYU's entire range uses soybean-based adhesive instead, which is the specific change that makes ENF-grade emission (≤0.025 mg/m³) possible — see how the glue itself works in our soy-glue explainer.

What is ENF grade, and how is it different from "formaldehyde-free"?

"Formaldehyde-free" is a marketing phrase describing something that does not exist. ENF is a real, defined, third-party-testable grade — the strictest emission class under GB/T 39600-2021, capped at ≤0.025 mg/m³. The difference is that one is a claim nobody can verify, and the other is a number you can ask a lab to check.

Ask for the number, not the label.

JIYU's entire range is ENF grade as standard — not a paid upgrade. Send us your spec and we will send the test report along with the quote.
