IN SHORT
ENF is the strictest formaldehyde emission class in China's GB/T 39600-2021 standard: a wood-based panel sample that releases 0.025 mg/m³ or less in a 1 m³ climate chamber falls into it. It is a grade that a test report assigns to a tested sample, not a brand and not a promise that a board gives off nothing, so a proper ENF claim should come with a report number, a laboratory, a method and a description of the sample.
Search for 'what is ENF board' and you find a mix of brochures, shop-floor claims and half-explanations. ENF is simple once you see where it sits: it is the top class of a formaldehyde emission scale, and it describes a measured result rather than a brand or a licence. This page gives the plain meaning first, then a way to read an ENF claim on a quote so you can tell whether it is complete.
ENF is the name of the top class on a formaldehyde emission scale. The scale comes from GB/T 39600-2021, a Chinese national standard that sorts wood-based panels, plywood included, by how much formaldehyde gas a test sample gives off. Most quotes in Malaysia use three steps from that scale: E1, E0 and ENF, with ENF at the strict end. To land in the ENF class, a sample must measure 0.025 mg/m³ or less in a sealed 1 m³ climate chamber. So when someone says 'ENF board', the accurate reading is a board whose tested sample fell into the top emission class. It is a statement about emission and nothing else. It does not describe the veneer species, the number of layers, the strength or how the panel copes with damp. Those are separate properties, and a buyer who treats ENF as shorthand for 'good board' will end up asking the wrong questions.
Four misreadings come up again and again around workshops and job sites. First, ENF is not a certificate. Nobody issues a licence to a brand; a laboratory measures a sample and the result falls into a class. Second, it is not a promise that a board gives off nothing at all, because wood itself releases trace amounts and every panel has some emission. ENF is a ceiling, not an absence. Third, it is not a brand or a product line: any maker can print the letters, which is exactly why a claim needs backing. Fourth, it is not a statement about every sheet in every delivery, because a report belongs to the sample that was tested. Keep these four in mind and most inflated sales lines, such as ENF presented as a quality mark or a badge of approval, become easy to spot.
Behind the letters there is a plain procedure. A piece of the board is cut to a set size and placed in a climate chamber with a volume of 1 m³, where temperature, humidity and air exchange are held steady. After the test period, the air in the chamber is sampled, the formaldehyde concentration is measured and the result is reported in mg/m³. That number is then compared with the class limits in GB/T 39600-2021. In JIYU's report, the laboratory is the Liuzhou Quality Inspection and Testing Research Center, which holds CMA accreditation, and the method follows GB/T 17657-2022 and GB 18580-2025. That level of detail is what a trade buyer should expect to see. If a supplier cannot say which chamber method, which unit and which laboratory stand behind a figure, the figure has no context, and it cannot be compared with anyone else's.
A bare number means little until you can see its neighbours. In the same 1 m³ chamber method, E1 allows up to 0.124 mg/m³, E0 allows up to 0.050 mg/m³ and ENF allows up to 0.025 mg/m³. That puts the ENF ceiling at half of the E0 ceiling and about a fifth of the E1 ceiling. Two cautions help when you read another supplier's sheet. First, the units must match. Other test methods report in different units, and those figures cannot be set beside mg/m³ values, so a smaller-looking number in another unit proves nothing. Second, a measured value is not the same as the class limit: a sample that read below the ENF ceiling still belongs to ENF, but the actual reading shows how much headroom there was. Ask for both the grade and the reading. Our guide to ENF, E0 and E1 goes deeper on the three classes.
Sort every ENF claim into one of three levels. Level one is the bare word: 'ENF plywood' with nothing else. That is a claim waiting for evidence. Level two adds a standard and a limit, such as ENF at 0.025 mg/m³ or less under GB/T 39600-2021. That tells you what the class means but still does not show that this particular product reached it. Level three adds the paperwork: a report number, the laboratory, the method and a description of the sample. Only level three can be checked, and a good supplier will usually offer it without being chased. Also watch the wording. 'ENF grade' describes a result, whereas phrases that suggest a licence or a stamp from some authority borrow credibility that the grade does not carry. For a step-by-step list of questions, our checklist on verifying an ENF plywood supplier goes through a report line by line.
JIYU's plywood is made to ENF grade across its range, and the third-party evidence we publish is one report: JC26-WT0087, issued by the Liuzhou Quality Inspection and Testing Research Center on 14 July 2026. A sample we submitted measured 0.022 mg/m³ after 77 hours in the 1 m³ chamber, inside the 0.025 mg/m³ ceiling for the ENF class under GB/T 39600-2021. Read it for what it is: a result for the submitted sample, not a figure for any single sheet. The factory inspects each sheet and releases only batches that pass, but that is internal quality control, separate from the laboratory report. The glue matters too, since most formaldehyde in plywood comes from the adhesive, and our soybean-glue article explains that side. If your project needs paperwork for a particular order, say so in your enquiry and we will tell you what exists.
Is ENF the same as E0?
No. They are neighbouring classes in GB/T 39600-2021. ENF allows up to 0.025 mg/m³ and E0 allows up to 0.050 mg/m³ in the 1 m³ climate chamber method, so ENF is the stricter class and E0 sits between ENF and E1.
Does ENF mean the board has been approved by an authority?
No. ENF is a class defined in a standard. A laboratory measures a submitted sample and reports a result, and that result either falls inside the class limit or it does not. What you can check is the report: its number, the laboratory, the method and the sample.
Does ENF mean the board gives off nothing at all?
No. Wood itself releases trace amounts of formaldehyde, so every wood-based panel has some emission. ENF is a ceiling of 0.025 mg/m³ or less, which is a low limit but not an absence.
What should I ask for when a supplier says a board is ENF?
Ask for the report number, the laboratory, the method, the measured value in mg/m³ and a description of the sample tested. For reference, JIYU's report is JC26-WT0087, and its submitted sample measured 0.022 mg/m³.
