IN SHORT
Laminated plywood is a plywood core with a decorative face bonded onto one or both surfaces, and the face material (melamine paper, PVC film, high-pressure laminate or real wood veneer) changes how the board looks, wears and edges. Before ordering, confirm the core, the face, whether one or both sides are faced, and how the cut edges will be sealed.
You are comparing quotations for kitchen cabinets or wardrobes, and one line says "laminated plywood" while another says "melamine board" or "veneer". The words overlap, so a label alone does not tell you what the board is. This guide separates the core from the face, so you know what to ask before anything is cut.
On a quotation or a supplier's product page, laminated plywood means plywood with a decorative face bonded onto one or both surfaces. That gives you two separate things to check: the plywood underneath, and the face on top. A listing that describes only one of them leaves you guessing about the other. The core carries the screws, hinges and weight of the cabinet. The face carries the colour, the feel and the wear. In a Malaysian home, kitchen cabinets and wardrobes meet steam, humid air and daily handling, so both parts matter, and a good face cannot rescue a weak core or the other way round. When you compare two quotations, write the core and the face as two separate lines in your own notes, then ask each supplier to fill in whichever line is blank. Ask what the core is by name, because the word laminated does not tell you.
A face can be melamine paper pressed on with heat, a PVC film, a high-pressure laminate sheet, or a thin slice of real wood veneer. In a showroom sample they can look alike, so the useful question is how each one is applied and what it does at the edges and corners. Melamine faces are bonded on in a hot press at the factory. For sheet laminates and films, ask how the face is attached at the edge and look at the edge of a sample. Real wood veneer is a thin slice of timber, which is a different product from a printed wood-grain face, so do not assume a wood-grain finish means real wood: ask whether it is veneer or a printed pattern. JIYU's boards are plywood with a melamine face. The wood-grain, marble, tech-fabric and plain colours in the range are all melamine patterns, not real wood veneer.
Yes. The face hides the core, so a decorative surface tells you nothing about what is inside. Ask whether the core is plywood, how many layers an 18mm sheet has, and what glue holds the layers together. JIYU's 18mm plywood has 11 layers pressed crosswise and is bonded with soybean glue. JC26-WT0087 is a third-party test report on a submitted sample, the finished faced board, and that sample measured 0.022 mg/m³ against the ENF limit of 0.025 mg/m³ under GB/T 39600-2021. The report is for the submitted sample, not a promise about every sheet, so ask any supplier for the report number, a description of the sample and the date. ENF is a grade, not a certificate. With a plywood core you can also look at the cut end of a sheet and see the layers; a cut end with no layers belongs to a different kind of board.
A decorative face covers the flat surfaces only. Every cut end exposes the core, and in a Malaysian kitchen those cut ends sit near the sink and the hob. How the edges are finished can affect how a cabinet copes with humid air. Ask your carpenter how each cut end will be covered, whether the edging matches the face, and who seals the edges around the sink cut-out. This is workmanship rather than board quality, and a supplier cannot settle it from the sheet alone. Check the sink base and the doors nearest the cooker first, because moisture can reach the core through any gap there. JIYU's board has a 10-year limited warranty that covers manufacturing defects only: glue failure (delamination), cracking not caused by external force, and moisture blistering caused by a manufacturing defect.
It depends on where the board sits in the cabinet. A wardrobe door shows both sides, so each side needs a face you are happy with. JIYU's 6mm back and drawer panels are faced on one side only: one side is a wood-grain or colour from the range, and the other is a plain colour, so only one side matters when you choose. Every sheet leaves the factory already faced, because the melamine is pressed on by a hot press, which cannot be done by hand. For that reason JIYU does not supply unfaced sheets. If you need an unfaced sheet to finish yourself, JIYU is not the supplier for that. Only 18mm and 6mm are in stock, so ask before planning around any other thickness.
Is laminated plywood the same as melamine plywood?
Not necessarily. Laminated is the wider word for any plywood with a decorative face, and melamine is one kind of face. Ask the supplier to name both the core and the face in writing.
What thicknesses does faced plywood come in at JIYU?
Only two thicknesses are in stock: 18mm (11 layers) and 6mm for back and drawer panels. The common 18mm sheet size is 2440 × 1220mm. For any other thickness, ask whether it can be ordered.
What should I ask a supplier about laminated plywood?
Ask four things: what the core is, what the face is, whether one or both sides are faced, and whether there is a third-party test report with its number and sample description.
What does the ENF grade on a board actually tell me?
ENF is a formaldehyde emission grade of 0.025 mg/m³ or below under GB/T 39600-2021, read from a test report on the sample that was tested. Ask for the report number, the unit (mg/m³) and the sample description.
