IN SHORT
Among interior design materials, the board behind the doors is only fixed if the spec sheet names it, so write the material (plywood), the thickness and layer count for each part, the formaldehyde grade as a limit with its standard (for example ENF, no more than 0.025 mg/m³ under GB/T 39600-2021), the supplier's test report number, and how edges and cut-outs are finished. Then copy the product name and report number into the order and check the delivered boards against them.
Interior design materials cover everything a client sees and touches, from interior decor materials such as laminates, veneers and paint to the renovation materials that hold them up. A material board can show only the first group, and a spec that says just 'plywood' or 'ENF board' can leave the rest to whoever supplies the sheets. This guide sets out what to write on the board line of the schedule so that the quotation, the delivery and the test report can all be checked against one line.
Start with the material class. In interior design materials lists, 'board' can mean plywood, MDF, particleboard, block board or melamine-faced chipboard, and each behaves differently around screws and moisture. Write 'plywood' and, if you want to be exact, 'cross-layered veneer plywood', so that a quotation for a fibre or chip board no longer matches the line. Plywood is built from veneers whose grain alternates from layer to layer. Two boards of the same thickness can be built from a different number of veneers, so write the layer count down as its own item. Then give a thickness for every part instead of one figure for the whole cabinet, with carcass sides, shelves and tops on one line and back panels and drawer bases on another. Finally add the sheet size, for example 2440mm × 1220mm (4 × 8 ft), so that quantities and cutting plans refer to the same sheet. If a supplier does not hold the thickness you wrote, ask whether it can be ordered rather than letting a nearby thickness slip in.
Write the grade as a limit, not as a label. Under GB/T 39600-2021, measured by the 1 m³ climate chamber method, ENF means no more than 0.025 mg/m³, E0 no more than 0.050 mg/m³ and E1 no more than 0.124 mg/m³, and a lower number means less release. A line reading 'ENF, no more than 0.025 mg/m³, GB/T 39600-2021' can be checked against a report, while 'low formaldehyde' gives nothing to check against. ENF is a grade defined in the standard rather than a badge that a laboratory hands out, so describe the board by its grade and by the report behind it. Ask the supplier to attach that report and copy its number into the line. On the report, read the issuing laboratory, the standard, the method, the value in mg/m³ and the description of the sample. The report describes the sample that was submitted, so also check which product and thickness it names.
Edges and openings are where the layers of a board are exposed, so the spec should say how they are finished. For visible edges, name the edge banding material and say whether it covers the front edges only or every exposed edge. For openings such as sink and hob cut-outs and pipe or socket penetrations, write that cut faces are sealed after cutting. In a humid climate with wet kitchens, bare cut edges around the sink and hob are where moisture can reach the board, so a line that names the sealing step is worth the few words it takes. Keep the edge finish on its own line, apart from the face finish, because the face finish, whether laminate or veneer, is a separate item from the edge treatment. If the drawings include a wet-zone cabinet, mark it in the schedule so the carpenter can see where the sealing line applies.
Materials for renovation arrive as a delivery rather than as a sample, so if a different board turns up, the aim is to make the change visible rather than to assume bad intent. First, put identifiers into the material schedule and the purchase order: the product or series name, thickness, layer count, grade and report number. Second, state that no substitute is accepted unless it is proposed in writing and approved before cutting. Third, check on arrival: compare the label or wrapping with the schedule, look at a cut edge and count the layers, and confirm the thickness. Keep a photo of the label and the edge next to the delivery note. If something does not match, hold the sheets before cutting, not after. The report number also lets you ask the supplier to confirm in writing that the delivered product is the one the report describes.
Copy this into the board line of your interior materials schedule and fill each blank. Material: plywood, cross-layered veneer. Thickness by part: carcass ___; back panel and drawer base ___. Layers: ___ for the carcass board. Sheet size: ___. Formaldehyde grade: ENF, no more than 0.025 mg/m³, GB/T 39600-2021, 1 m³ climate chamber method; if the project calls for E0 or E1, write 0.050 or 0.124 mg/m³ instead. Test report: laboratory ___, report number ___, date ___, sample described as ___. Edges: banding material ___ on ___ edges; cut faces sealed after cutting; openings (sink, hob, pipes, sockets) ___. Face finish: ___, listed separately from the core. Product or series name: ___. Substitution: none without written approval before cutting. Arrival check: label, thickness, layer count and report number compared with this line. Keep it to one block per board type, so that the designer, the carpenter and the supplier read the same words.
JIYU SDN BHD supplies ENF-grade plywood, with 18mm (11 layers) and 6mm both in stock, so the thickness lines above can be filled from stock. If you need another thickness, ask whether it can be ordered, because today we hold only those two. A sample submitted for third-party testing measured 0.022 mg/m³ in report JC26-WT0087, issued by the Liuzhou Quality Inspection and Testing Research Center, a CMA-accredited laboratory, against the ENF limit of 0.025 mg/m³. That figure describes the submitted sample, so write the report number next to the product name in your schedule rather than treating it as a statement about every sheet. Stock is held at our Puchong warehouse, orders are dispatched within 3 days of being placed and arrival depends on the logistics company you choose, and the plywood carries a 10-year one-to-one limited warranty covering manufacturing defects only: delamination, cracking not caused by external force, and moisture blistering caused by a manufacturing defect. We supply the boards; we are not a renovation main contractor.
Do I need to attach the test report to the drawings?
Attaching it, or at least writing its number on the board line, lets anyone reading the schedule trace the grade to a document. The report describes the sample that was tested, so if the product, thickness or source changes, the old number no longer describes what is arriving and the line should be updated with a new report. Keep the report in the project file so the carpenter and the client can see the same page.
How can a client see the carcass board on an interior material board?
Ask the supplier for a small offcut of the carcass board and fix it beside the laminate and veneer samples with the edge facing out. The client then sees the layers and the thickness rather than only the face finish, and a label on the offcut can carry the product name and report number from your schedule. A strip of the edge banding placed next to it shows how the edge will look.
What if the client asks for E0 instead of ENF?
Write the E0 limit in the same line: under GB/T 39600-2021, measured by the 1 m³ climate chamber method, E0 means no more than 0.050 mg/m³, while ENF means no more than 0.025 mg/m³. Then ask the supplier whether it can supply that grade and request the matching test report. Do not reuse an ENF report number on an E0 line, because a report belongs to the board it describes.
Can one board line cover kitchen cabinets and wardrobes?
Write the grade and report number once per board type, because a report only supports the board it describes. Thickness by part, edge finish and sealing can differ between rooms; for cabinets near water, consider adding a line for sealing cut faces and openings, and for wardrobe interiors an edge banding line for exposed edges. One block per board type, with room-specific notes added underneath, keeps the schedule short and consistent.
