Small Kitchen Cabinet Design in Malaysia: Making Limited Space Work

IN SHORT

A small kitchen cabinet design works when the cabinets use every wall up to the ceiling, put drawers where you reach most often, and keep the aisle clear of swinging doors. Because the room is tight, the board and edge sealing matter as much as the layout, since splashes, steam and cooking heat reach every cabinet.

In a condo or an older terrace house, the kitchen can be the smallest room, yet it has to do a lot of work. Cabinets there cannot be a copy of a showroom display. They have to be planned around the walkway, the appliances you actually own and the humidity of a Malaysian kitchen. This guide walks through the choices that matter most when floor space is short.

Where does storage go when there is very little floor?

When the floor is short, the answer is to build upward and keep the middle of the room open. Run the wall cabinets right up to the ceiling instead of stopping short and leaving a dusty gap. The top shelves are awkward to reach, so keep them for things you use a few times a year, such as festive trays, large pots and spare appliances, and keep daily items between the worktop and shoulder height. A tall unit at the end of a run can hold a pantry, a broom space and the rice container without taking worktop. If the kitchen has a window, let the cabinets stop either side of it rather than cutting across it, because light makes a tight room feel less boxed in. Ask your designer to show the elevations of each wall, not just the plan, so you can see how tall each unit goes and what sits at eye level.

Which units should be drawers and which should be doors?

In a small kitchen you are standing close to the cabinets, so a drawer is easier than a door because you see the whole contents at once and nothing is lost at the back. Put wide drawers in the base run for pots, pans, plates and tins, and keep door units for the sink area, where pipes make drawers awkward, and for tall storage. Ask which runner type is being used and whether the drawer pulls out fully, because a half-extension runner hides the back part of the drawer, which defeats the purpose. Plan the drawer boxes and the back panel too. JIYU stocks 6mm plywood for backs and drawer bottoms alongside 18mm plywood for the cabinet carcass, and asking what your designer intends to use for those thinner parts is a sensible question before you sign.

How do you stop cabinet doors blocking a narrow aisle?

A door that swings into a narrow walkway can catch you or hit a second open door. Look at the plan and mark the swing of every door, along with the fridge door, the oven or dishwasher door and the entrance. Where two swings overlap, change one of them. Options include a door hinged on the other side, a drawer instead of a door, a lift-up door on the wall run that rises out of the way, or a sliding door for a tall pantry. Each option has hardware that needs to be specified, so ask for the hinge and lift-up mechanism type to be written down in the quotation. In a galley-shaped kitchen, which has two parallel runs facing each other, this check is worth doing carefully, because there is nowhere for an open door to go.

What can be done with corners and awkward gaps?

Corners can waste space in a small kitchen, because a plain corner cabinet swallows items at the back. A corner can instead be planned with a pull-out mechanism, a carousel shelf, or by letting one run stop short so the corner is simply left as worktop. Awkward gaps beside a fridge or at the end of a run can become a narrow pull-out for trays and spice bottles, as long as the width has been measured on site rather than guessed. A small kitchen may have a column, a pipe boxing or an uneven wall, and the cabinet maker should build around them. If you want more on how the layout shapes these decisions, our guide to kitchen cabinet layouts covers the L-shape, the U-shape, the galley and the wet and dry kitchen split.

Which board and edges suit a compact, humid kitchen?

A small kitchen concentrates steam, splashes and cooking heat, so the cabinet box needs a board and edges that you have checked for moisture exposure. The carcass is the box behind the doors, and the edges around the sink and hob take the most splashes, so ask how they are sealed. Plywood is built from cross-laid layers, and 18mm board is what JIYU stocks for carcasses. JIYU's 18mm board is 11-ply and is made with soybean glue to ENF grade, which means a formaldehyde emission of 0.025 mg/m³ or lower under GB/T 39600-2021. Our submitted sample measured 0.022 mg/m³ in report JC26-WT0087. Ask any maker how the cut edges are sealed, especially under the sink, and what the cabinet backs are made from. See our guide on the kitchen cabinet carcass for what to check.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make a small kitchen look bigger with cabinets?

Take the wall cabinets to the ceiling, keep door colours light and simple, and let the layout leave an open walkway. A clear window or a run of worktop without clutter also helps. Cabinets with fewer visible joints and handles look calmer, but the floor plan matters more than the colour.

Are drawers better than doors in a small kitchen?

For base units, drawers are easier because you see everything at once. Doors still make sense under the sink and for tall storage. The key is to specify full-extension runners so the drawer pulls out completely, and to check that doors do not swing into the walkway.

What thickness of plywood should a small kitchen cabinet use?

JIYU stocks two thicknesses: 18mm for the main cabinet body and 6mm for back panels and drawer bottoms. Other thicknesses are not stocked, so ask us whether a special order is possible.

Can JIYU design and install a small kitchen in my condo?

JIYU builds built-in kitchen cabinets and installs them with its own team across Peninsular Malaysia. The process starts with your needs, an on-site measurement, a 3D drawing and an itemised quotation that you confirm before signing. Water, electrical and ceiling work is subcontracted, because JIYU is not a general contractor.
