Storage Underneath Stairs in Malaysian Homes: Building a Cabinet Into the Awkward Space

Published 16 October 2026 · JIYU SDN BHD

IN SHORT

The space under a staircase works best as a made-to-measure cabinet, because the sloping underside gives every compartment a different height. Use drawers for the deep, low end, keep the contents dry, leave a little airflow, and treat the staircase as a fixed structure: do not cut into it or hang heavy loads from it without checking with whoever built it.

Under the stairs of a terrace house or a semi-detached home there is a triangle of space that is too awkward for ready-made furniture and too useful to leave empty. Getting value from it depends on the shape, on what you want to store, and on how a closed space behaves in a humid country. The points below follow the order in which a builder will ask you to decide.

What can you store under the stairs?

Decide on the contents first, because the shape of the space suits some things and not others. The tall end, under the upper part of the flight, holds items that stand upright: a vacuum cleaner, a mop stand, umbrellas, a foldable chair or a small ladder. The low end, towards the foot of the stairs, suits shallow, wide items such as shoes, bags, storage boxes, festive decorations and pet supplies. Food and cleaning products should not share a compartment, and anything heavy should sit low. Keep out items that dislike damp or heat, such as important papers, electronics or clothes you want to stay fresh, unless you add a sealed box and ventilation. A short list with approximate sizes, written before the carpenter measures, makes the layout much easier to design.

Drawers, doors or an open niche: which suits the sloping space?

Pull-out drawers use the deep, low part of the triangle better than a hinged door does, because you can reach items at the back without crawling in. Each drawer box can be cut to its own height, so even a steep staircase can have full-width drawers along the lower run. A door is simpler for the tall end, where upright items stand, and a pair of narrow doors keeps the swing small if the hallway is tight. An open niche suits a tidy display or a shoe rack, but dust and humidity reach everything stored there. Whichever you choose, ask how the drawer runners are fixed and what load they carry, because a drawer filled with tins or tools is heavy. Limit the number of different widths so the front looks calm.

How do you handle damp, airflow and dust in a closed space?

The space under a staircase has little air movement, and a closed compartment in a humid country can hold damp air. Give it a way to breathe: small gaps or vents at the top and bottom of the doors, or open slats in part of the front, so that air moves through and nothing smells musty. Keep the floor clear when mopping, either by raising the cabinet on a plinth or by sealing the bottom edge of the board and the base panel. Dry a used mop outdoors before it goes back into the cabinet. A moisture absorber in a closed compartment can help, but it does not replace ventilation. If you notice a damp wall behind the space, deal with the cause before the carpentry goes in.

What should you check before building into the space?

Look at what already runs through or sits in the space. Some homes have an electrical distribution board, a water meter, pipes or a cable route there, and these must stay reachable for service. Ask the builder to leave access panels where needed instead of boxing them in. Treat the staircase as a fixed structure: do not cut into it or hang heavy loads from it unless whoever built it has confirmed that is acceptable, and build the cabinet as a unit beneath it. Measure after the stairs and the floor tiles are finished, since the slope and the tile thickness change the height of every compartment. Any service point has to be settled before the drawings are final, because moving a pipe or a cable afterwards means opening up finished work.

Which board suits an under-stair cabinet?

The cabinet is a set of boxes cut at different angles, so the board has to cut cleanly, hold screws and keep its shape when the air is humid. Plywood is built from thin wood layers glued with the grain crossed, and that cross-layering is what helps it keep its shape. JIYU supplies 18mm plywood, made of 11 layers, for carcasses and shelves, and 6mm for backs and drawer bottoms. Ask your builder which board will be used, whether the angled cuts are edge-sealed, and how the lowest panels are protected from the floor. Sloped panels have long exposed edges, which are the first place moisture enters, so edge sealing matters here as much as on any straight cabinet. Match the finished face to the hallway so the unit looks like part of the house.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are drawers or doors better under the stairs?

Drawers reach the deep, low end without crawling in, while doors suit the tall end for upright items. A mix of both works: drawers where the slope is low and doors where it is tall.

Does the space under the stairs need ventilation?

A little, yes. A closed space with little airflow can hold damp air in a humid climate, so add small vents or slatted sections and keep damp items out.

When should the cabinet under the stairs be measured?

After the staircase, the floor tiles and the wall finishes are done, because they change the height and the angle of each compartment.

Can JIYU build a cabinet under my stairs?

JIYU builds built-in cabinetry such as kitchen cabinets and wardrobes. Send us photos and measurements of the space, and we will tell you what we can quote on. Plumbing, electrical and ceiling work are subcontracted, because JIYU is not a main renovation contractor.

How many sheets do you need?

Enter your cabinet size and get a cutting list plus an estimate of 18 mm and 6 mm sheets.

About the author

JIYU SDN BHD is an ENF-grade plywood supplier based in Puchong, Selangor, Malaysia. It also builds built-in cabinetry such as kitchen cabinets and wardrobes for homeowners and installs it with its own team.

Want this for your own unit?

Send us photos and measurements of the space on WhatsApp, and we will quote on your specification. A third-party test report covers a sample we submitted: ENF grade means 0.025 mg/m³ or lower under GB/T 39600-2021, and that sample measured 0.022 mg/m³ (report JC26-WT0087). Board orders leave our Puchong warehouse within 3 days (arrival depends on the courier), and the board carries a 10-year limited warranty on manufacturing defects in the board (delamination, cracking not caused by external force, moisture blistering from a defect).
