Wardrobe Design with Dressing Table in Malaysia: Building the Vanity into the Wardrobe Wall

Published 25 October 2026 · JIYU SDN BHD

IN SHORT

A wardrobe with a built-in dressing table puts the vanity counter, mirror and drawers into the same wall as the wardrobe, which saves floor space in a Malaysian master bedroom and keeps the look continuous. Decide where the vanity sits in the run, how it is lit and powered, and what the counter and drawers will hold before the cabinet maker measures, because these choices fix the wiring and the board layout.

In a condo or terrace-house master bedroom, a separate dressing table competes with the bed, the wardrobe doors and the air-conditioner for the same wall. Building the vanity into the wardrobe run solves that, but it changes how the whole unit is drawn. This guide covers the decisions that matter: position, light, power, storage and the board the counter is built from.

Why build the dressing table into the wardrobe?

A free-standing dressing table needs its own stretch of wall, its own socket and space for a stool, and in a compact master bedroom that wall is hard to find once the bed and the wardrobe are in. Folding the vanity into the wardrobe run means one continuous unit along one wall, with the doors, the counter and the mirror sharing the same finish. It also gives you storage above and around the vanity that a separate table cannot: tall compartments for bags, shallow drawers for accessories, and a cabinet for the hair dryer that keeps the cable off the counter. The trade-off is flexibility. A built-in vanity cannot be moved when you rearrange the room, and its height and depth are fixed by the person it is drawn for. If two people will use it, agree on the height before the drawing is signed. If you expect to move house within a short time, a free-standing piece may make more sense than building in.

Where should the vanity sit in the wardrobe run?

The vanity works best where there is natural light from the side and where a person sitting at it does not block the wardrobe doors next to it. Placing it at the end of the run, near the window, gives daylight on the face and keeps the sitting space out of the walkway. Placing it in the middle of the run splits the wardrobe into two halves, which can suit a couple who each want their own side, but the doors beside the vanity must open without hitting the person seated there. Sliding doors on the flanking sections avoid that clash; hinged doors need a narrow panel or a gap so they can swing fully. Check the route from the bedroom door to the bathroom as well: a vanity stool pulled out into that route becomes a nightly obstacle. Mark the stool's position on the floor plan, not only the counter, and walk the room with tape on the floor before you approve the layout.

How do you plan the mirror, lighting and sockets?

The mirror and the lighting are the parts of a built-in vanity that are hardest to change later, because they decide where the electrician runs cables. A mirror set into the back panel above the counter is the simplest option; a mirror on a door or a hinged cabinet gives storage behind it but needs stronger fixings. Consider lighting from the front or both sides of the face rather than a single ceiling downlight, which can cast shadows. Strip lights or small fittings built into the frame need a power point inside the wardrobe and a switch you can reach while seated. Ask for at least one socket at counter height for a hair dryer or straightener, placed so the cable does not cross the mirror. Electrical work is subcontracted, as we are not a main renovation contractor, so fix the mirror, light and socket positions on the cabinet drawing before it is final.

What storage belongs under and beside the counter?

Think about what will actually sit at the vanity each morning and plan the storage around it. Shallow drawers directly under the counter keep small items flat and visible, so you do not dig through a deep drawer to find one lipstick. Dividers can be cut from the same board so they match the carcass. A deeper drawer or a door below can take bottles, a hair dryer and a basket of styling tools. Leave knee space clear in the middle so the stool tucks under the counter and you can sit close to the mirror. Beside the vanity, a narrow tall section with shelves is useful for perfume, skincare and anything you want within reach but off the counter. Avoid open shelves directly above a counter where powders and sprays are used, because dust settles on whatever is stored there. Closed compartments with doors, or glass-fronted doors if you want to see what is inside, keep dust off the contents.

Which board and edges suit a vanity counter in a humid bedroom?

A vanity counter takes daily wear: bottles set down wet, sprays that land on the surface, and cleaning with damp cloths. The carcass and the counter should be built from a board that holds screws for drawer runners and hinges. Plywood's cross-laminated layers hold fixings well. The weak point of any board is its cut edge, so ask for every edge of the counter, including the back edge against the wall, to be sealed or banded, not only the front. JIYU's boards are melamine-faced; hot styling tools are best set on a heat mat rather than straight onto any counter surface. If formaldehyde matters to you in a bedroom, ENF is the strictest grade under GB/T 39600-2021, at 0.025 mg/m³ or below; the JIYU board sample sent for third-party testing measured 0.022 mg/m³ in report JC26-WT0087.

What should you tell the cabinet maker before measuring?

Give the cabinet maker a short brief before the site measure so the drawing reflects how you will use the vanity, not a standard module. Include who will sit at it and whether they prefer to sit or stand, so the counter height can be set; which side the window is on; whether you want sliding or hinged doors on the wardrobe sections; where the existing sockets and switches are; and a list of what the drawers must hold, including the hair dryer and any tall bottles. Mention the stool you plan to use, because its height and width decide the knee space. Ask for the drawing to show the mirror size, the light positions and the socket locations on the same sheet as the cabinet, so the electrician and the cabinet installer work from one plan. Finally, ask the quotation to name the board, thickness and emission grade for the carcass, the counter and the drawer bases, line by line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a dressing table be added to an existing wardrobe?

It can, if the wall beside the wardrobe is free and the finish can be matched. Adding it inside an existing run means removing a section, which is harder to do neatly. Ask the cabinet maker to check whether the existing carcass and doors can be extended before you decide.

How should the edges of a vanity counter be finished?

Ask for every cut edge to be sealed or banded, including the back edge against the wall and the edges around any cable opening. Bottles and sprays land on these edges daily, and an open edge is where moisture gets into any board.

How high should a built-in dressing table be?

There is no single right height. Set it for the person who will use it and the stool they will sit on, and agree on it before the drawing is signed, because a built-in counter cannot be raised later.

What board does JIYU use for wardrobes and vanity units?

Wardrobes and vanity units are made to your measurements using our ENF-grade plywood (0.025 mg/m³ or below); we stock 18mm (11-ply) and 6mm. We give a 10-year limited warranty on manufacturing defects in the board (delamination, cracking not caused by external force, moisture blistering from a defect).

How many sheets do you need?
