Chipboard or Plywood for Cabinets in Malaysia: Which Part Gets Which Board

Published 30 October 2026 · JIYU SDN BHD

IN SHORT

Chipboard is made from wood chips pressed with resin, while plywood is made from thin wood layers glued crosswise. For cabinets in Malaysia, the choice is best made part by part: the sink base and any cabinet near water need the most careful board choice and edge sealing, while dry, lightly loaded parts are the ones some quotations fill with chipboard.

A quotation may say just chipboard or plywood, as if it were a single choice for the whole kitchen. In practice a cabinet has many parts and each part has a different job. This guide goes through the parts one at a time so that you know what to ask about before the quotation is signed.

What is the real difference between chipboard and plywood?

Chipboard, also called particleboard, is made by pressing small wood chips or particles together with resin into a flat panel. Plywood is made by gluing thin sheets of wood, called veneers or plies, on top of each other with the grain of each layer turned crosswise to the next. Plywood is built from crosswise veneer layers, while chipboard is built from pressed particles, and the panel can be sold with a melamine face. Neither word tells you the grade, the glue or the quality of the board, so a quotation that only says chipboard or only says plywood is incomplete. JIYU supplies ENF-grade plywood only and does not supply chipboard, so this guide treats chipboard as a neutral comparison, not a product we sell.

Which board suits the sink base and other wet-zone cabinets?

The sink base is the cabinet most exposed to a leak, a drip from the tap or a wet cloth left on the base panel. Water reaches the board through the bottom edge, the cut-out for pipes and the screw holes, and a board that soaks it up may swell and not return to its shape. For this cabinet, ask for a board whose cut edges and pipe cut-outs can be sealed properly; plywood is a reasonable option. No board likes standing water, and plywood that is soaked for long can still lift, so a leak must be fixed whatever the material. The same reasoning applies to a dishwasher bay, a cabinet beside a wet kitchen,. If a quotation puts chipboard in these places, it is fair to ask why, and to ask how the edges and cut-outs will be protected.

What about wall units and dry shelves that carry little weight?

Wall units far from the hob and sink sit in drier air and carry lighter loads, so this is the part of the kitchen where the board choice is worth asking about. Think about what hangs on the box. Wall units are fixed to the wall and loaded with plates and glasses, so the screws and wall fixings need a board that holds them firmly for years, and a heavy shelf needs support underneath, whatever board is used. Ask what the fixing method is and where the rail sits. If you choose a mix of boards, make sure the quotation names each one against each unit, so that you can see exactly which cabinets are plywood and which are not.

What changes for a wardrobe in a humid Malaysian bedroom?

A wardrobe is a dry piece of furniture on paper, but a bedroom in Malaysia can be quite humid, and that moisture reaches every raw edge, hinge hole and shelf pin hole. Wardrobes also carry long hanging loads and wide shelves, which bear on the screws and on the panel across the span. Whatever board is chosen, the carcass needs sealed edges and a fixed back panel to keep the box square. Think about the shelf spans as well: a long shelf of folded clothes can sag whatever it is made of, so ask about a centre support. Doors are a separate question from the carcass, so ask about the board and the face finish for each.

What should the quotation say about the board before you sign?

Ask for the carcass board to be listed as its own line, with the board type, the thickness of the sides, base, shelves and back, and how the cut edges are sealed. Ask which cabinets use which board if more than one is quoted. Ask for the formaldehyde grade and a test report that names the tested sample; ENF under GB/T 39600-2021 is a limit of 0.025 mg/m³, compared with 0.050 for E0 and 0.124 for E1. ENF is a grade and not a certification, and a report covers the submitted sample, not every sheet. Finally, ask what the warranty covers and what it excludes. JIYU's 10-year limited warranty covers manufacturing defects in the board only: delamination, cracking not caused by external force, and moisture blistering caused by a manufacturing defect. Two quotations are only comparable when the carcass lines match.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is chipboard the same as particleboard?

The two names can describe the same type of panel: wood chips or particles pressed with resin. Both names are used for the same type of panel. Neither name tells you the grade, so ask for it in writing.

Can I use chipboard and plywood in the same kitchen?

Yes, a quotation can mix boards. What matters is that each cabinet is listed with its board, so the sink base is never left unspecified.

Does JIYU sell chipboard cabinets?

No. JIYU supplies ENF-grade plywood, with 18mm and 6mm in stock at the Puchong warehouse, and builds cabinets from it. For chipboard you would need to ask another supplier.

What should I check on the edges of a cabinet board?

Look for edge banding that is bonded right to the corners with no lifted patches, especially near the sink and any cut-out. A raw or unsealed edge is a place moisture can get in.

How many sheets do you need?

Enter your cabinet size and get a cutting list plus an estimate of 18 mm and 6 mm sheets.
