How Kitchen Cabinets Are Installed in a Malaysian Home: From a Ready Site to Handover

Published 2 November 2026 · JIYU SDN BHD

IN SHORT

Kitchen cabinets are installed in a fixed order: the site is made ready first, then the base cabinets are set level and fixed, the wall cabinets are hung on sound fixings, the worktop is measured and fitted, and doors and drawers are adjusted last. Knowing that order lets a homeowner check each stage on site instead of discovering a crooked door or a wet sink base after the team has left.

A homeowner may see the kitchen only twice: as an empty room and as a finished kitchen. Everything in between happens during the installation visit, and the way it is done affects how the doors, drawers and worktop sit and work. This guide walks through how kitchen cabinets are installed in a Malaysian home, what has to be finished before the installers arrive, and what to look at before you sign off.

What has to be ready before the kitchen cabinets arrive?

Cabinets go in after the wet and dusty trades, so the room has to be ready for them. Wiring for the hob, hood and power points, the water inlet and drain for the sink, and any gas piping should already be in place at the positions shown on the cabinet drawing. Wall and floor tiling should be finished and the grout dry, because cabinets are fixed against those finished surfaces. Plaster ceiling work and painting that throw dust should be done or protected. In a newly handed-over condo or terrace house, also check that the walls behind the cabinet line are dry, with no damp patch from a neighbouring bathroom or an external wall that takes the afternoon rain. If any of these points move after the drawing is approved, tell the cabinet maker before production, not on installation day, because a sink cabinet built around one drain position will not suit another.

How are base cabinets levelled and fixed to the wall?

A tiled floor may rise or dip slightly along a kitchen run, even in a new home. A careful installer finds the highest point of the floor along the cabinet line and sets every base cabinet to a single level line taken from that point. Adjustable legs or a plinth frame take up the difference, so the worktop sits flat even where the floor does not. Each cabinet box is checked level from front to back and side to side, then joined to its neighbour with screws through the side panels so the run behaves as one unit. Finally the run is fixed back to the wall. A base cabinet that is left floating on its legs can shift when someone leans on the worktop, and that small movement later shows up as gaps at the doors. In a wet kitchen, keeping the carcass off the floor on legs or a plinth also keeps mopping water away from the board edges.

How are wall cabinets hung so they stay up?

Wall cabinets carry plates, bowls and jars above head height, so the fixing matters more than the cabinet itself. The installers mark a level line for the bottom of the wall units, measured to leave working space above the worktop and to clear the cooker hood. The fixing has to suit the wall: brick and concrete take wall plugs and screws, while a lightweight or drywall partition needs fixings made for that wall or a backing support built in beforehand. Some installers screw a hanging rail or bracket to the wall first and hang the cabinets on it, which lets each box be adjusted before it is locked. Neighbouring wall units are joined to each other in the same way as the base run. Ask what the wall behind your wall units is made of before the day, and say so early if you plan to store heavy items such as a slow cooker or stacks of plates up there.

When does the worktop go on, and what happens at the sink and hob?

The worktop is measured from the installed base cabinets, not from the drawing, because the real run is what the top has to fit. Depending on the material, the worktop may be fitted on the same visit or templated and brought back later. The cut-outs for the sink and the hob are marked from the actual appliance or its template, and the hob position is checked against the hood above. Around the sink, the cut edges of the cabinet board and the cut-out in the worktop are the parts most exposed to water. Ask the installer how the sink cabinet floor and the cut edges around the plumbing holes are sealed, and whether a gap is left behind the cabinet for the pipes. The plumber then connects the sink, tap and drain. Plumbing and electrical work in our projects are subcontracted, because we are not a main renovation contractor, so it helps to know which trade comes back for which job.

How are doors, drawers and hinges adjusted at the end?

Doors and drawer fronts go on last, after the carcass is fixed and the worktop is in place, so nothing knocks them out of line. Concealed hinges can be adjusted in three directions: in and out, up and down, and side to side. The installer uses those adjustments to make the gaps between doors even and the faces flush with each other. Drawer runners are checked for a smooth, full pull and an even closing line across the fronts. Handles, kick boards and any filler strips at the walls are fitted at this stage too. If a door will not line up even after the hinge is adjusted, the cause may sit further back: a cabinet box that is out of square or not level. That is worth raising on the day, while the team is still on site, rather than living with a door that never quite closes.

What should you check before you sign off the installation?

Walk the kitchen with the installer before they pack up. Open and close every door and drawer, and look along the run for even gaps and straight lines. Press on the worktop at the corners and near the sink to feel for any rocking. Look inside the sink cabinet after the plumber has connected the water, run the tap, and check for drips at the joints. Check that the hob, hood and power points line up with what was on the drawing. Look at the visible edges of every panel for edge banding that is lifting or missing, especially around the sink and dishwasher spaces. Ask what the board is: for our kitchens it is our ENF-grade plywood, with the 18mm board made of 11 layers and rated under GB/T 39600-2021 at no more than 0.025 mg/m³, with our submitted sample measuring 0.022 mg/m³ in report JC26-WT0087. Write down anything that needs a return visit and agree it before the final handover.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are wall cabinets or base cabinets installed first?

Either order can work. Hanging the wall units first gives the installers free space to work without leaning over the base run, while fitting the base first gives a level reference to measure up from. What matters is that both runs are set to level lines and fixed, and that the order suits your kitchen.

Can kitchen cabinets be installed before the tiling is done?

It is better to finish tiling first. Cabinets are fixed against the finished wall and floor, and tiling around installed cabinets leaves untidy edges and risks getting adhesive and water on the board.

Who connects the sink and the hob after the cabinets are installed?

A plumber connects the sink, tap and drain, and an electrician or gas installer handles the hob and hood connections. Ask your renovation company which trade returns for each connection and when.

What if a cabinet door is still uneven after installation?

Concealed hinges can be adjusted in three directions, so a small misalignment can be corrected on site. If adjustment does not fix it, ask the installer to check whether the cabinet box itself is level and square.
