Wall Hung Cabinets in Malaysian Homes: Walls, Fixings, Load and Board

Published 21 October 2026 · JIYU SDN BHD

IN SHORT

A wall hung cabinet is a cabinet fixed to the wall with nothing touching the floor, and it stays level and tight when three things match: a wall that can take the fixings, a hanging method sized for what goes inside, and a carcass board that holds screws without swelling. Check the wall and what runs inside it first, then agree the load, the height and the board in writing before anyone drills a hole.

Wall hung cabinets free up floor space, keep the cabinet away from mop water and make a small room look larger. They also put the whole weight of the cabinet and everything in it on a few fixings and one strip of board, so planning matters more than for a cabinet that stands on legs. This guide walks through the decisions in the order a homeowner in a Malaysian condo or terrace house meets them.

Where does a wall hung cabinet make sense in a Malaysian home?

Kitchen upper cabinets above the counter are one example, but the same idea works above a washing machine in the service yard, over a study desk, beside a bathroom basin, or as a floating unit in a bedroom. Each spot brings its own conditions. Above a hob, the cabinet meets steam and cooking heat every day, so its underside and the edges beside the cooker hood take the most punishment. In a service yard the air can be humid and dusty, and a cabinet above a washing machine feels the vibration of every spin. Above a desk, the load is books and files, which weigh more than they look. Write down what each cabinet will hold before choosing a style, because the contents decide the fixing, the shelf spacing and how stiff the shelves need to be. A cabinet for glasses and spice jars asks far less of the wall than one that will carry rice, canned food and a microwave.

What kind of wall can carry a wall hung cabinet?

Find out what the wall is made of first, because the fixing has to suit it. Brick and concrete walls in terrace houses and condominiums can take screws and anchors when the installer uses fixings made for masonry and drills into solid material rather than loose plaster. Lightweight partitions such as gypsum board are a different case: a heavy cabinet needs to be fixed into the timber or metal frame behind the board, or the wall needs reinforcing before the cabinet goes up. If you are unsure, knock on the wall, check the developer's floor plan or ask your management office. Then find out what runs inside it. Kitchen, yard and bathroom walls can hide water pipes and electrical wiring, and drilling through a pipe in a newly handed-over unit is an expensive way to start. Ask the installer to locate pipes and cables with a detector and mark them on the wall before drilling. Plumbing and wiring are subcontracted trades, as we are not a general renovation contractor, so agree their routes before the cabinet layout is fixed.

How is a wall hung cabinet fixed, and what decides the load?

There are three hanging methods you are likely to hear about. A hanging rail, sometimes called a French cleat, is a strip screwed along the wall; the cabinet hooks onto it, so the load spreads across the whole width and the cabinet can be levelled once it is up. Adjustable concealed hangers sit inside the top corners of the cabinet and hook onto a wall plate, which lets the installer fine-tune height and depth. Screwing straight through the back rail into the wall is the simplest method and suits light, short cabinets. Whichever method is used, the load is more than the cabinet's own weight. Count the full contents, the open doors, and the extra pull when someone leans on an open door or hangs a bag from a handle. On a long run, ask how many fixing points each cabinet has and whether the rail runs continuously. Ask to see the fixings before the cabinet goes up, not after.

How high should a wall hung cabinet sit?

Height is a balance between reach and working space, so it should be set by the people who will use the cabinet rather than by a figure in a catalogue. Above a kitchen counter, leave enough clear space underneath for the rice cooker, the kettle or a coffee machine, and enough room to chop without knocking your head when you lean forward. The shortest regular user should reach the first shelf without a stool. Above a hob, the cabinets have to work around the cooker hood, so follow the hood maker's installation guide for clearance and do not box in the duct. Above a washing machine, leave space to open the lid or door and lift the laundry out. Before production, mark the planned underside of the cabinet on the wall with masking tape and live with it while you cook and clean for a while before production starts. It is a cheap way to find out whether you will bump into it, and much easier to change than a finished cabinet.

Which board should a wall hung cabinet be built from?

A wall hung cabinet hangs from its top rail and back, so the board at those points has to hold screws firmly and stay flat under steady weight. If the board around the hanging points swells in humid air or crumbles around a screw, the cabinet can tilt forward or the doors can drop out of line. Boards pressed from wood particles or fibres can lose grip at a screw hole once moisture gets into a cut edge. Plywood is built from thin wood layers glued with the grain crossed, and that cross-layering helps it hold screws and keep its shape. JIYU builds cabinet carcasses with its ENF-grade plywood: 18mm sheets with 11 layers, and 6mm sheets for backs. ENF is the strictest formaldehyde grade in China's GB/T 39600-2021, at 0.025 mg/m³ or lower, and the sample JIYU submitted for a third-party test measured 0.022 mg/m³ (report JC26-WT0087). Whichever board you choose, ask for sealed edges on the underside near the hob and around any cut-outs for lights or pipes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a wall hung cabinet go above a washing machine?

Yes, as long as the wall can take the fixings and there is room to open the machine and lift the laundry out. Leave a little space for air to move, since a service yard can be humid, and keep heavy refills in a floor cabinet so the wall cabinet holds the lighter items.

What are the warning signs that a wall hung cabinet needs checking?

Doors that no longer line up, a gap opening between the top of the cabinet and the wall, a cabinet that has tipped forward slightly, or cracked paint and plaster around the fixings. Empty the cabinet and ask the installer to check the fixings and the board at the hanging points before you load it again.

Does a wall hung cabinet need a back panel?

A back panel squares the cabinet, adds stiffness and keeps dust and insects out of the gap against the wall. The hanging load itself should go through the top rail or the hanging rail fixings rather than a thin back panel on its own, so ask how the cabinet is hung as well as whether it has a back.
