IN SHORT
Before you commit to IKEA kitchen cabinets in Malaysia, check four things beyond the tag: what each system actually includes, what the cabinet boxes are made of, how the edges and joints cope with humidity, and what the warranty covers. On IKEA Malaysia's product pages (checked 5 October 2026), KNOXHULT lists a worktop, legs and plinth, while the METOD modules we checked do not (legs, plinth and suspension rail are sold separately), and neither includes the sink, tap, appliances, installation or delivery. Judge a kitchen on build quality and on how well it fits your space, not only on the first number you see.
You have just collected your keys and walked through IKEA's showroom in Damansara or Batu Kawan. The displays look clean, and the configurator on the website produces a cabinet list in minutes. What a display cannot show is how those cabinets will behave in a Malaysian kitchen: the humidity, the splashes around the sink, an awkward corner, a wall that is not square. This guide looks at IKEA's kitchen systems from the quality side: what comes with each system, what the boxes are made of, what you still have to arrange yourself, and how that differs from cabinets built to order on plywood.
IKEA Malaysia sells two kitchen systems. KNOXHULT is the ready-made range: a complete kitchen comes in fixed layouts, and IKEA's product pages (checked 5 October 2026) list the cabinets, doors, worktop, legs, plinth, shelves, hinges and fittings as included. METOD is the modular system you plan piece by piece: each module is listed with a specific front, and the METOD modules we checked do not list legs, plinth or suspension rail (those are sold separately) or a worktop. The two systems are therefore not like-for-like. KNOXHULT trades choice for completeness, while METOD gives you more freedom over the layout but leaves more decisions, and more separate parts, to you. IKEA changes its listings, so read the current product page for every item you plan to use before you fix your plan.
With either system, the sink, water trap, tap, handles or knobs, appliances and lighting are sold separately (IKEA product pages, checked 5 October 2026). Installation and delivery are services rather than part of the product listing, so confirm with IKEA, or with the contractor you hire, who will deliver, assemble, level and fit everything for your layout, and ask for that scope in writing. A kitchen is only as good as its installation: a cabinet run that is not level, or a worktop that is cut or sealed badly around the sink, will cause trouble in the first rainy season however good the boxes are.
A full set price only means something once you know what the set contains. For an IKEA kitchen, list every line separately: base cabinets, wall cabinets and any tall cabinet; the fronts for each; for METOD, the legs, plinth and suspension rail, which the modules we checked list as sold separately; the worktop if your system does not include it; filler panels and scribe strips for the gaps at walls; handles or knobs; the sink, water trap and tap; appliances and lighting. Then add the services: delivery, assembly, levelling, cutting and sealing the worktop, and the plumbing and electrical connections. IKEA cabinet installation cost is not part of the product listing, so ask IKEA or your installer to quote it as its own line, with the scope written out. Do the same with a custom cabinet maker, and ask them to split the cabinet line into board, thickness, grade, hardware and installation. When both quotes cover the same layout and the same lines, the comparison is fair; when one leaves out the worktop or the installation, the lower figure is not the cheaper kitchen.
Four things decide how an IKEA kitchen performs once it is in your home. First, the fronts: IKEA's door ranges differ in material and finish, so read the product page for what each one is made of, and think about how it will cope with cooking oil, steam and daily wiping rather than only how it looks in the showroom. Second, the fittings: hinges, drawer runners and soft-close mechanisms matter more than the colour of the door because you touch them every day, so check which are included and which are optional extras for the units you choose. Third, assembly and levelling: a common cause of doors that will not close or drawers that bind is assembly rather than the product, so the cabinet run needs to be built carefully and levelled against your actual floor. Fourth, the awkward parts of your room: if a wall is not square or the floor slopes, the gaps are covered with filler panels and scribe strips, and the cut edges around a sink or hob opening need to be sealed properly, or humidity will find them. A written scope from whoever installs the kitchen is the best protection on all four points.
IKEA's cabinet boxes (the carcass, meaning the frame that holds the doors and drawers) are made of particleboard, which is compressed wood chips and resin with a melamine surface; the door material varies by range. Plywood is built differently: thin layers of veneer glued with the grain running in alternate directions. Neither is automatically right for every kitchen, but in Malaysia's humidity the weak point of any board is its exposed edge, so whichever system you choose, ask how the edges are sealed, especially around the sink and dishwasher. A custom cabinet maker building on plywood cuts each box to your exact ceiling height, awkward corners and appliance sizes, usually with design, fabrication and installation handled by one team, and lets you choose the board grade. If formaldehyde matters to your household, ask for the grade in writing: ENF is the top formaldehyde-emission grade under GB/T 39600-2021, capped at ≤0.025 mg/m³. JIYU, for example, supplies ENF-grade plywood; the sample JIYU submitted for testing measured 0.022 mg/m³ in third-party test report JC26-WT0087. Warranty terms vary by cabinet maker and board supplier: JIYU's ten-year limited warranty covers delamination, cracking (not caused by external force) and moisture blistering from manufacturing defects, on the board itself only. Whichever route you take, get the warranty terms in writing and read them line by line; for IKEA, check IKEA Malaysia's current warranty terms.
Whichever way you go, these questions are worth putting in writing before you pay anything. What is the cabinet box made of, and how are the edges sealed? Which hinges and drawer runners come with each unit, and which are optional? Who is responsible for levelling, for cutting the worktop and for sealing around the sink? What does the warranty cover, who honours it, and does it still apply if someone else installs the cabinets? What exactly is included in delivery and installation, and what is left for you or another trade? And for the board itself, what is its formaldehyde-emission grade, and can the supplier show a test report that names the product rather than a general claim? A supplier who answers all of these clearly and in writing is usually one who has thought about how the kitchen will actually live.
IKEA makes sense when your layout is simple and fits standard module widths without much filler or custom cutting, and when you are comfortable with assembly or willing to hire an experienced installer. It also suits a straightforward standard kitchen where nothing unusual is needed. Choose a custom plywood cabinet maker if your kitchen has unusual dimensions (low ceilings, non-standard appliance slots or tricky corners), if you want one party to handle measuring, making, installing and the plumbing and electrical coordination, or if you are staying in the home long-term and want cabinets built to cope with Malaysia's humidity. The custom route also gives you a single point of accountability and a choice of board grade, for example ENF-grade soybean-glue plywood (formaldehyde emission ≤0.025 mg/m³ under GB/T 39600-2021). Either way, compare the two on what is built, what is written down and who stands behind it.
Can I buy IKEA kitchen cabinets in Malaysia and have someone else install them?
Yes. IKEA sells the cabinets, doors, and hardware separately, and you're free to hire any contractor you trust to assemble and install them. Many renovation contractors and independent carpenters offer IKEA installation services; just make sure they're experienced with IKEA's specific hardware and levelling system, because improper assembly can lead to doors that won't close or drawers that bind.
Does IKEA Malaysia include the countertop with its kitchen cabinets?
It depends on the system. On IKEA Malaysia's product pages (checked 5 October 2026), KNOXHULT cabinets list a worktop as included, while the METOD modules we checked do not, so a METOD kitchen needs a countertop arranged separately. Either way, ask IKEA or your installer who measures, cuts, fits and seals the worktop, especially around the sink, and get that in the written scope before you commit.
How long do IKEA kitchen cabinets last in Malaysia's climate?
IKEA's cabinet boxes are made of melamine-faced particleboard, which is less moisture-resistant than plywood. In air-conditioned homes with good ventilation, they tend to hold up well, but in kitchens with high humidity, poor exhaust, or frequent water splashes near the sink, particleboard edges are more prone to swelling and delamination over time. If longevity and moisture resistance matter to you, consider cabinets built on multi-layer plywood instead.
Is IKEA's kitchen cabinet warranty valid if I install the cabinets myself?
Check IKEA Malaysia's current warranty terms before self-installing, because the conditions that apply to self-installation, and what the warranty does and does not cover, are set by IKEA and can change. Keep your receipt and assembly manual, follow the assembly instructions exactly, and double-check that every cam lock and bracket is tightened to spec; if anything is unclear, ask IKEA customer service to confirm in writing before you start.
Can IKEA kitchen cabinets be customized to fit my exact wall measurements?
IKEA cabinets come in a fixed set of module widths, so you'll use filler panels or scribe strips to bridge gaps between the last cabinet and the wall. The system is designed for standardization, not true custom sizing, which means you may end up with a strip of dead space that can't hold a drawer or shelf. If your kitchen has unusual dimensions or you want every centimetre optimized, a custom cabinet maker who cuts each box to your exact measurements will deliver a better fit.
Is IKEA cabinet installation cost included in the cabinet price?
No. On IKEA Malaysia’s product pages (checked 5 October 2026), installation and delivery are services rather than part of the product listing. Ask IKEA or the contractor you hire to quote assembly, levelling, worktop cutting and sealing as separate lines, in writing.
