IN SHORT
The types of plywood a Malaysian buyer meets are named after their job: commercial plywood for general interior work, marine plywood for wet exposure, film-faced plywood for concrete formwork, structural plywood for load-bearing use, and decorative plywood faced with melamine or veneer for cabinetry and furniture. Choose the type by where the panel will be used, then check the glue, the formaldehyde grade with a test report, the thickness and the face, because the name alone does not tell you these.
Plywood is not one product: panels with the same thickness can differ in glue, face, core and intended use, and the wrong type wastes money or fails on site. This guide sorts the types a contractor, cabinet maker or designer in Malaysia comes across, and lists the questions that turn a type name into a clear order.
All plywood is made the same basic way: thin layers of wood veneer glued together with the grain of each layer crossed against the next, which keeps the panel stable and lets it hold screws. What changes from one type to another is the species of the veneers, how the core is built, the glue used to bond the layers, and what is pressed onto the face. Those choices are made for a particular job. A panel meant to be cast against wet concrete needs a tough coating and a glue that survives repeated wetting. A panel meant for a kitchen carcass needs a flat, decorative face and a low formaldehyde grade for an indoor room. A panel for flooring or roofing needs strength ratings. Because the same thickness can belong to any of these families, a buyer who orders by thickness alone may receive a panel built for something else. Starting from the job, not the price list, avoids that.
Film-faced plywood, also called formwork plywood or shuttering ply, has a dark resin film on both faces so concrete releases cleanly and the panel can be reused on site. It is a construction product and is not meant for furniture. Marine plywood is made with glue and veneers selected for prolonged wet exposure, for boats, outdoor structures and places that stay wet; it is more than an indoor cabinet requires, though some buyers choose it for areas that see standing water. Structural plywood is made and graded for load-bearing uses such as floors, roofs and bracing walls, where strength is specified by an engineer. Buyers in Malaysia also meet general commercial plywood, a broad term for interior-grade panels used for partitions, hoarding and backing. For any of these, the use on site sets the type, and the engineer's or architect's specification overrides any general guide. If a supplier offers a substitute type, ask for the change in writing.
For kitchen cabinets, wardrobes and built-in furniture, buyers look for decorative plywood: a plywood core with a finished face. Melamine-faced plywood has a decorative paper impregnated with melamine resin pressed onto it, in plain colours and wood or stone patterns, so the panel needs no painting and is ready for cutting and edge banding. Veneered plywood has a thin slice of real wood on the face and is finished with stain or lacquer on site or in the workshop. Laminate-faced plywood has a high-pressure laminate sheet glued on for hard-wearing surfaces such as counters and shop fittings. For these indoor uses the questions are flatness, how well the panel holds hinge and runner screws, the face quality and the formaldehyde grade. JIYU supplies one type, melamine-faced plywood, in 18mm (11-ply) and 6mm, both stocked at our Puchong warehouse.
A type name describes the intended use, not the details that decide quality. It does not tell you the glue: two panels sold under the same name can be bonded with different adhesives, and the glue is the main source of formaldehyde in plywood. It does not tell you the formaldehyde grade, which under GB/T 39600-2021 ranges from ENF (0.025 mg/m³ or less) through E0 (0.050 mg/m³ or less) to E1 (0.124 mg/m³ or less), measured by the 1m³ chamber method. It does not tell you the number of layers or how evenly the core is laid up, which affects flatness and screw holding. So ask for the glue, the grade with a test report you can read, the thickness and layer count, and the face. JIYU's plywood is bonded with soybean-based glue and is ENF grade; its submitted sample measured 0.022 mg/m³ in third-party test report JC26-WT0087. That is a sample result, so ask any supplier which batch or sample their report covers.
Once the type is settled, put the rest on the order so there is nothing to interpret. Write the type and face: for example melamine-faced plywood, face colour code, one side or two. Write the size and thickness: JIYU supplies the 2440mm by 1220mm sheet size, and state the thickness and layer count you expect. Write the formaldehyde grade and ask for the test report and its number. Write the quantity in sheets and how it should be packed and delivered. A cabinet job can use one thickness for the carcass and shelves and a thinner one for the backs and drawer bottoms; JIYU's two stocked thicknesses, 18mm and 6mm, follow that split. Check the delivered sheets against the order before cutting: label, thickness, face, flatness and edges. JIYU ships orders within 3 days, and arrival depends on the logistics provider you choose. East Malaysia is not a standard door-to-door service, so ask before ordering.
What type of plywood is used for kitchen cabinets?
Kitchen cabinets use decorative plywood: melamine-faced, veneered or laminate-faced panels for the carcass, shelves and doors. Check the face, the thickness, how well it holds screws, and the formaldehyde grade with a test report you can read.
Is marine plywood needed for a kitchen?
Marine plywood is made for prolonged wet exposure and is more than an indoor cabinet requires. For a kitchen, a stable interior plywood with sealed edges and a plinth that keeps the base off the wet floor helps protect against splashes and mopping.
Can film-faced plywood be used for furniture?
Film-faced plywood is a formwork product with a dark resin film made for concrete casting and reuse on site. It is not made as a furniture panel, so choose a decorative plywood for cabinetry.
